A Remedy For That Frown

By Dern Heatherton

Botox is relatively uncomplicated, both in the delivery and the results achieved. This is one of the many reasons that Botox is the world's leading non-invasive cosmetic procedure. No other procedure comes close.

The most common use for Botox targets one of the most common problem area for patients who are dealing with skin rejuvenation - the treatment of the frown lines between the eyebrows. Botox makes your frown lines disappear. The reason is simple mechanics, based on the underlying muscles that cause the wrinkles to occur. The frown lines are reduced because the muscle that cause the wrinkles to occur is not activating in the same pattern.

The frown lines between the eyes are the most common area treated with Botox. Botox was actually approved for frown lines in 2002 by the FDA. The high rate of satisfaction among patients being treated for frown lines is one of the key drivers of the popularity of this procedure. Botox relaxes the frown. Some say it takes away that "angry" look and makes them more approachable. The end result is a more refreshed and relaxed appearance.

A healthy approach to any surgery requires that you be in relatively good physical health. Also, it's important to inform your doctor of any medications your currently taking to ensure there are no potential conflicts that could arise. The medical history should always be as detailed as possible. You want to include anything that could affect blood clotting or interact with any medication used in the procedure. These could include hormones, aspirin, vitamins, and herbal medications.

Patients should be aware of all aspects of their planned treatment. In other words, they should know very clearly whether they should discontinue certain medications, or even stop smoking.

To achieve the most desired results, you should take the following precautionary measures when preparing for your Botox treatment:

- Before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise, give yourself 24 hours

- Do your best to stay upright for 4-5 hours after the injections

- Do not massage the treated area or areas

- As directed by your doctor, be sure to follow the routine of your daily facial exercises

- And be sure wear sun block

It is best to restrict muscle movements right after your Botox procedure. This will give the agent a sufficient amount of time to settle.

Depending on your problem areas and the amount of Botox injected into the site, your procedure could be expected to last between three and six months. Facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear after the time period has passed. Fortunately, the wrinkles will not be as pronounced. It is normally when this occurs that a patient will return to have their procedure performed again. Repeated Botox procedures will be lasting progressively longer with each treatment. As such, a patient will require fewer procedures to achieve their desired results.
